Global Understanding
The major initiative of Sri Lanka United Nation Friendship Organisation is to focus Sri Lanka community for Global Understanding. All past activities and events were launched by SUNFO with the true meaning of Global Understanding.
Everyday life on our planet is undergoing transformation via cultural, social, economic, political and environmental processes which are separate and interrelated. From changing political maps to production processes reinvented by technology to transportation and communication innovations; these changes reach across all scales and boundaries.
The globalized social and spatial effects on each person's daily life on our planet are unevenly distributed. Still, all aspects involve new combinations and re-combinations of the cultural, social, economical and the natural on one side, and the spatial and temporal on the other.
To grasp these re-combinations the International UN-Year on Global Understanding focuses on globalization in everyday practices, in local contexts and in the practices of so-called global players. UN International Years serve to shine a spotlight on particular causes that are supported by the United Nation's charter and work. These actions set scientific research agendas while simultaneously improving public awareness for key issues of human life.
Accordingly, our political efforts towards proclamation of the Year of Global Understanding are divided between research and publicity programs. Results of academic research will be translated for use in the classroom and in broader public awareness campaigns (e.g. through a series of publications).
Typically, these briefs will examine the transformation of social institutions through individual engagement, as see in the following pairs: Food - eating (from farm to fork); Housing - dwelling; Clothes - clothing; Communication - communicating; Arts - imagining; Religion - believing; Mobility - moving; Sports - playing; Waste - recycling; etc. We call for scientific research in these activity fields in light of the following key dimensions:
- Unity/Diversity
- Cosmopolitanism/Parochialism
- Fluid identities/Rigid identities
- Mobilities/Stabilities
- Mapping/Acting
- (Local/)Ancient Civilisations/Global cultures
